Continuing Professional Development (CPD) - real estate

You may be:

• issued with an infringement notice
• prosecuted
• suspended or have your licence/registration cancelled
• unable to renew your licence

You do not need to do CPD if:

• you got a new licence and triennial certificate for the first time between 1 October and 31 December in the current calendar year;

and

• you completed a required exam within the 12 months before your licence was granted;

or

• you got a new Certificate of Registration (Sales or Property Management) for the first time between 1 October and 31 December in the current year;

or

• are granted an exemption by the Commissioner.

CPD training providers list

Consumer Protection covers the cost if you:

• are attending mandatory activities; and
• have a current licence or registration at the time of attendance.

You must cover the costs of attending:

• elective courses
• mandatory catch-up courses.

Training providers are responsible for uploading CPD points to your record. This must be done within 14 days of completing an approved CPD activity. If your record has not been updated, you will need to contact your training provider directly.

Ask your training provider for one of the following to keep as a record:

• statement of attainment;
• record of completion; or
• certificate of completion

Maintain your own CPD training log with the following details:

• CPD course name;
• training organisation(s);
• date(s) of attendance;
• number of CPD points earned.

Calculation of CPD points

Each CPD activity has different point value. The points are shown against each activity listed on the mandatory or electives pages.

The number of CPD points is calculated at differing rates per hour dependent on the training type and provider. 

For example a Registered Training Organisation's (RTO) course will have more points than one run by a non-RTO. RTOs must be registered by the Training Accreditation Council (TAC).

CPD points can be earned through an in-house training program if it has been approved by the Commissioner. 

You can claim one CPD point per hour to a maximum of 7 elective points if your agency:

• is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO); or
• hired a RTO to provide the traning.

One-half of a point per hour can be claimed on training conducted by:

• agency staff; or
• Other non-registered training providers

You can only obtain a maximum of three points from learning Category 4 training each calendar year, unless you are in a remote location. 

All mandatory training providers have been approved to deliver the mandatory activities online.

You do not have to apply to Consumer Protection for CPD distance learning packages.

Remote participants are those whose principal place of business lies outside a 100km radius of:

• Perth;
• Kalgoorlie;
• Geraldton;
• Bunbury;
• Port Hedland;
• Broome;
• Karratha;
• Northam;
• Margaret River; or
• Albany.

You can complete your CPD activities online. Contact the relevant training provider for the course you want to complete.

You can also claim up to six elective points each calendar year from learning Category 4 (in-house) activities.  

If your licence / registration was granted under the Mutual Recognition (Western Australia) Act 2001, you will need to meet the CPD requirements in WA.  For further information see the mutual recognition page. 

You may be able to have CPD activities completed in another state count towards your WA CPD points. If these activities have not been approved and listed on our website, you can apply for an exemption after completing the activity.

To apply for an exemption or ask a question, email the CPD team. Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. You must provide evidence of completing the activity including the subject matter and number of hours of training.

CPD does not apply to Real Estate and Business Agents operating with an automatic deemed registration (ADR).

Interstate agents must continue to meet the CPD obligations of their licence home state.

You can apply for an exemption in exceptional circumstances. It will only apply for the calendar year you apply for the exemption. You cannot apply for an exemption for a previous year.

You can apply for a total or partial exemption. Applications must be in writing and include evidence to back up your reasons.
