Continuing Professional Development (CPD) - real estate

The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program’s learning activities are for licensed:

  • Real estate agents
  • Sales representatives
  • Property managers

CPD increases consumer protection and promotes consumer confidence in the real estate industry.

The requirements of the CPD program are set by legislation. Failure to follow the requirements may result in a penalty of up to $5000.

Changes to CPD are coming in 2026

The following table compares the current and new CPD program. The new program will start on 1 January 2026.

Points

Real estate - 10 points per year 

Settlement agents – six points

Five points per year

 

Subjects /. topicsConsumer Protection set mandatory and elective subjects. 

Consumer Protection will publish CPD subject and topic guidelines. 

Participants must attain at least one point from each of the three CPD subject areas every CPD year.

CoursesConsumer Protection approves CPD training activitiesConsumer Protection approves training providers, upon application, for a three year period. 
CostsConsumer Protection covered the cost of mandatory training topics for agents.Participants will need to cover costs of their own CPD training.
RecordsTraining providers report attendance to Consumer Protection.

Participants  must keep their own records of completed CPD training for up to four years. 

Training providers must:

  • give participants a record of completion for the CPD activity
  • keep training records for four years.
Missed / Catch-up sessionsAgents could catch up on missed mandatory units if it was completed before renewal. All CPD points must be completed within the CPD year. 
Compliance Fine for not completing CPD

Two additional $1000 fines have been added for participants who

  • do not keep CPD records for four years
  • cannot produce CPD records when requested (without a reasonable excuse). 

CPD activity requirements 2025

The CPD program operates on an annual cycle based on the calendar year (January – December).

You must complete a total of 10 points by 31 December per calendar year if your licence/registration is:

  • current / existing
  • granted before 1 October in a calendar year.

Your ten points must be achieved from:

Compliance with the CPD program is checked after the end of each calendar year.

You cannot 'carry over' any extra CPD points to the next CPD period.
