Consumer Protection Awards winners and finalists

The Western Australian Consumer Protection Awards provides an opportunity to reward and recognise the achievements of individuals, non-government organisations, businesses, local governments, journalists and media outlets that have increased awareness of consumer issues, provided support for disadvantaged consumers or contributed to injury prevention for children. Potential nominees may have helped consumers with tenancy matters, scam prevention, debt management or understanding contracts.

Rona Okely Award

Marcel Sithole is a passionate, community-driven Financial Counsellor and Service Manager based in Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia, delivering life-changing consumer protection outcomes across more than 40 remote Aboriginal communities in the Fitzroy Valley since 2021. Known for a strong work ethic and an accessible, person-centred approach, Marcel combines preventative education with hands-on daily support to achieve meaningful, practical outcomes for individuals and families experiencing financial hardship.

The Financial Counsellors’ Association of Western Australia (FCAWA) is the peak body for financial counselling in WA, advocating for financial wellbeing and promoting sector excellence since 1985 to support resilient communities and reduce hardship. FCAWA represents and accredits financial counsellors and capability workers across metropolitan, regional and remote WA, delivering training, professional development, policy expertise and key regional forums, including the Newman and Goldfields Regional Forums in 2024 and 2025.

Ruby Hutchison Media Award

Winner: Erin Parke

Erin Parke has been a reporter in remote northern Australia for almost two decades, amplifying the voices of some of the country’s most isolated and marginalised communities. She works in a national reporting role, filing stories for the ABC across radio, television, online and social media platforms. Throughout her career, Erin has brought national attention to consumer affairs issues affecting remote and regional Australia, including uncovering a $20 million tax scam, exposing negligent cruise companies, and highlighting the unique challenges faced by consumers in remote Aboriginal communities when shopping and accessing essential services.

Kidsafe WA Award

Winner: Cancer Council WA’s Clear the Air

Cancer Council WA’s Clear the Air program aims to protect young West Australians from nicotine addiction by reducing vaping, smoking and the use of new nicotine and tobacco products. This initiative aims to shift attitudes, raise awareness, and encourage quitting, through targeted campaigns and support for young people. We also build the capacity of youth-focused professionals and organisations to support young people. Alongside this work we continue to advocate to governments and key decision makers to strengthen legislative reforms and enforcement to further protect young people from these harmful products and to create a healthier future for all.

David Hillyard Award

Gary Newcombe has over 40 years’ experience in the Commonwealth and State public sectors and the Western Australian Parliament, primarily in the areas of legal services; corporate investigations; policy development; community education and service delivery. Gary served for 21 years as a Director with Consumer Protection, including numerous periods in the Commissioner’s role. During his time at Consumer Protection, Gary led the establishment of Consumer Protection's consumer education program, the implementation of FuelWatch, the development and implementation of the Australian Consumer Law in WA and the creation of the Consumer Protection Awards.
