Manufacturer's warranty

Most new cars come with a manufacturer's warranty covering faults or defects.

Bait advertising

Bait advertising is so called because it offers a "bait" to draw customers to the store or business and they can get "caught" as a result.

Enticing prospective customers into stores when there are reasonable grounds for believing that the goods will not be in the store or are unlikely to be available for a reasonable time at the advertised price, is unlawful.

You must therefore be sure that reasonable stocks are available to satisfy the expected demand generated by any advertisement.

Motor and caravan shows

Interstate salespeople coming to WA to carry out sales activities for trade events and expos for a short term must be licensed to carry out that work on behalf of a licensed dealer. 

To satisfy the knowledge requirements for the grant of a licence you will be required to undertake the motor vehicle salespersons licensing requirements course conducted by an accepted Registered Training Organisation (RTO) prior to the application being considered. Farmers

In Western Australia farmers and primary producers have the right to ask for assistance from Consumer Protection if they have a dispute with a shop or business. This is an extra service available to farmers and primary producers that is not available to other businesses.

Receipts and other proof of purchase

A business must give a consumer a 'proof of purchase’ for anything valued $75 or more.

A consumer can ask for a receipt for anything under $75.The business must provide it within 7 days.

Proof of purchase 

A proof of purchase is usually a receipt but can also be:

  • GST tax invoice
  • handwritten receipt
  • a digital reciept

It must be easy to read, in plain English and state the:
